IHS internationally

Activity in the general area of IHS is increasing in many leading universities around the world, albeit research and educational programmes may have different emphases and different programme names.

The Faculty of Integrated Human Studies at Kyoto University, is a leader in this emerging area.  It aims “to integrate the humanities, and the social and natural sciences into more interdisciplinary and internationally oriented academic approaches appropriate for our time.”

A related approach is Human Sciences at Oxford University.  Their course “studies humans as biological, social and cultural species”.

There are many other examples of interdisciplinary studies concerned with human and global issues.  All recognise that:

  • Integration of diverse disciplines is necessary to coherently understand the human condition.
  • That such understanding is crucial to address major problems of our time and to plan for a desirable and sustainable global future.
