Why IHS?IHS at UWA aims to develop students as educated citizens able to live in, influence and affect society. Taking a graduate course in IHS will also equip students with skills suitable for the workplace and will (perhaps more importantly) enable students to think critically about themselves and their place in the world. We strive to develop in students a curiosity about human origins and human histories and above all germinate a concern for, and an intent to participate in improving, the future for humankind.
How do I go about studying IHS?IHS is now offered in two graduate courses: the Graduate Diploma in Integrated Human Studies and its associated Master of Integrated Human Studies. These degree courses combine coursework and research in a wide range of interdisciplinary areas related to human wellbeing in a sustainable environment. Coursework units introduce students to Integrated Human Studies and its associated methodologies while the research component allows students to conduct their own interdisciplinary investigations by putting what they have learnt in to practice.
What career prospects will I have? The skills gained from studying IHS can lead to a variety of career paths. IHS promotes generic skills that enable graduates to think rationally and critically; manage complex projects; design and carry out research; build computer literacy; examine and test ideas and solve problems; analyse data and communicate information; work independently and in groups; apply knowledge to new situations; question accepted wisdom; and be open to new ideas. Such skills are integral to achieving success in any number of careers:
Project Management
Diplomacy, foreign affairs, public service, politics
Humanitarian aid, non-government organizations
Human resources, training and development, business consultancy
Journalism, publishing, mass communication, writing
Public relations, corporate communications, marketing, advertising
Health, science and technology, research
Architecture, environmental management, urban development, environmental planning
Teaching, education, academia
Further to the previously mentioned skills, IHS students will be supported in becoming well-rounded individuals with a better understanding of, and a greater willingness to contribute to, the wider community. |
