IHS fosters interdisciplinary research directed at a better understanding of the human condition and to the improvement of human wellbeing within a sustainable environment. 

It both initiates and facilitates research activities through:

• Its own targeted research programmes
• Collaboration with other research groups
• Contract research activities with government, non-government organisations and industry
